Bihar Police Detains 694 Amid Protests Over NEET Exam Paper Leak

Overview of the Protests and Police Action

Patna, July 27 - Bihar police announced on Monday that they have detained a total of 694 individuals during a statewide shutdown called in protest against the recent leak of the NEET exam question paper. Notably, around half of those detained are minors. According to a statement from the police headquarters, the violence that erupted during the Bihar bandh on July 25, organized by leftist student groups, resulted in injuries to 91 police personnel and several officials, along with 13 civilians.

The statement further revealed that out of those detained, 339 minors and students were released after age verification, while the remaining 355 individuals are facing legal proceedings for their alleged involvement in violent activities.

Details of the Violence and Injuries

The supporters of the bandh reportedly vandalized 13 government vehicles and set fire to another. Among those injured were the Superintendent of Police (SP) from Siwan and one Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) each from Siwan and Sitamarhi. Additionally, two Block Development Officers (BDOs) from the Saran district sustained serious injuries during the unrest.

One of the BDOs lost an eye, while the other suffered a severe head injury. The police headquarters confirmed that both BDOs are currently receiving treatment in separate hospitals in Patna, and their conditions remain critical.
