Bihar Legislative Council Elections Scheduled for June
Bihar Legislative Council Election Announcement
On Tuesday, the Election Commission announced the schedule for biennial elections for nine seats in the Bihar Legislative Council. This includes a seat vacated by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary after his victory in last year's assembly elections. Additionally, a by-election has been declared for a council seat that was left vacant following former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's election to the Rajya Sabha.
According to the schedule released by the Election Commission, voting for all nine seats, including the by-election, is set for June 18, with the counting of votes taking place on the same evening. The entire election process is expected to conclude by June 20.
Key Dates for the Election Process
The election notification will be issued on June 1, with the last date for filing nominations set for June 8. The scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on June 9, and candidates will have until June 11 to withdraw their nominations. Among the members of the Bihar Legislative Council whose terms are expiring in June are Kumud Verma, Ghulam Gauss, Mohammad Farooq, Bhishma Sahni, Sanjay Prakash, Sameer Kumar Singh, and Sunil Kumar Singh.
Vacancies Created by Recent Elections
On another note, Shri Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha and Samrat Chaudhary vacated their assembly seats after being elected to the Bihar Assembly. The need for a by-election arose after Nitish Kumar, who has served as the state's longest-serving Chief Minister, resigned following his election to the Rajya Sabha in March.
