Bihar's Mango Festival: A Direct Link Between Farmers and Consumers

On June 25 and 26, a mango festival is being held at the Bihar State Cooperative Union premises located on Buddha Marg in the city. This event allows local residents to purchase ripe mangoes directly from farmers, ensuring that the fruits are free from chemicals and carbide. The festival was inaugurated on Thursday, June 26. The honorable Minister of Cooperation, Ramkripal Yadav, praised this initiative by NABARD, marking the first two-day mango festival as a commendable effort. The sweetness and quality of Bihar's mangoes are renowned across the country, symbolizing not just the king of fruits but also the rich culture and traditions of Bihar.

Empowering Farmers Through Cooperative Initiatives

The Cooperative Department has established Primary Vegetable Producer Cooperative Societies (PVCS) across all blocks. These PVCS will soon transition into Multi-Purpose PACS, enabling them to engage in various agricultural and non-agricultural activities, including the production of vegetables, fruits, flowers, spices, honey, fish, dairy, goat, and poultry farming, as well as seed, fertilizer, storage, packaging, and branding. Farmers with mango orchards will also be able to join these cooperatives.

A Call to Action for Farmers

The minister emphasized the goal of making farmers active participants in the entire production, storage, processing, branding, marketing, value addition, and export chain. Through NABARD's Producer Organization Development Fund (PODF), Bihar's Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) are gaining significant economic strength. He urged all mango farmers in Bihar to recognize that their hard work and produce contribute to the state's identity. He encouraged them to focus on quality production, adopt new technologies, and connect with markets in an organized manner, assuring them of government support.

Festival Highlights and Opportunities for Farmers

During the festival's inauguration, Gautam Kumar Singh, the Chief General Manager of NABARD, highlighted the opportunity for city residents to buy mangoes directly from the trees. The festival aims to connect mango farmers with the market, allowing them to sell various chemical-free mango varieties directly to consumers. This direct selling approach will help farmers understand customer preferences and enhance their marketing skills. Visitors can explore and purchase different varieties of mangoes from Bihar, which offer a taste unmatched by those found in stores. At the start of the exhibition, farmers had already sold around 4-5 quintals of mangoes. Additionally, the exhibition aims to provide farmers with training in modern horticultural techniques and facilitate discussions with experts, focusing on minimizing post-harvest losses at low costs.

Support from Cooperative Leaders

Vinay Kumar Shahi, the President of the Bihar State Cooperative Union, expressed the union's readiness to support all cooperative and farmer-related initiatives. During the festival's inauguration, several dignitaries, including Ramesh Chandra Chaubey, President of the Bihar State Cooperative Bank, Vishal Singh, Chairman of BISCOMAUN, and Deepak Kumar, General Manager of the Bihar State Gramin Bank, shared their insights.
