Bihar Government Introduces Direct Employment for Outstanding Athletes
Bihar's Commitment to Athletes
The Bihar government has taken a significant step towards providing commendable employment opportunities for athletes based on their sporting achievements. The cabinet has approved the notification format for the Bihar Outstanding Athletes Direct Appointment (Amendment) Rules, 2026. Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh welcomed this decision, emphasizing the government's dedication to the bright future and socio-economic empowerment of athletes. She stated that ensuring a clear and improved job structure for athletes excelling in sports has been a priority.
Under the revised rules, athletes who win gold, silver, or bronze medals in the Olympic Games, represent India in any format of Olympic sports, or play for the Indian cricket team in any format will be appointed at pay level-09 (grade pay of ₹5400). Similarly, athletes representing India in any format of Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, as well as silver and bronze medalists, will be appointed at pay level-07 (grade pay of ₹4600).
Additionally, athletes winning gold and silver medals in any format of the National Games and Senior National Championships will be appointed at pay level-06 (grade pay of ₹4200). On this occasion, Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh remarked that Bihar's athletes have consistently showcased their talent on national and international platforms. Through this revised rule, we are ensuring that those who perform excellently receive appropriate recognition for their hard work and dedication. I believe this decision will not only inspire our current athletes but also encourage millions of youths in Bihar to pursue sports as a career.
She added that the state government is continuously working on sports infrastructure, training facilities, and the welfare of athletes. This decision marks a crucial initiative to motivate athletes and promote sports as a viable career option. The new system will make it easier for talented athletes in the state to access government jobs and enhance the sports culture in Bihar.
