Bihar Government Imposes Ban on Meat and Fish Sales Near Educational and Religious Institutions
New Restrictions on Meat and Fish Sales in Bihar
Vijay Kumar Sinha, the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, announced that the state government has decided to prohibit the sale of meat and fish near educational institutions, places of worship, and crowded areas. He cited public health risks and concerns that such environments could foster violent behavior among children. Sinha clarified that this is not a new regulation; rather, it is the enforcement of existing laws and regulations. He emphasized that adhering to these rules is in the public's best interest, promotes health, and strengthens cleanliness initiatives.
Monitoring Compliance with the New Ban
Authorities are closely monitoring shops operating near temples, mosques, schools, colleges, and other crowded public spaces, identifying violations that threaten social harmony. The proposed ban on meat and fish sales will be universally enforced, with no exemptions for licensed vendors. Sinha, who oversees the Urban Development and Housing Department, stated that while individual dietary preferences are respected, maintaining social harmony and avoiding offense to anyone's sentiments is crucial. He stressed that public health should not be compromised by contaminated products.
Crackdown on Illegal Meat and Fish Shops
Action has already commenced. The Urban Development and Housing Department issued strict directives to all municipal bodies on Sunday to take action against illegal meat and fish shops operating without valid licenses. The department noted that many of these shops violate the Bihar Municipal Corporation Act, often operating in open and unsanitary conditions, posing serious threats to cleanliness, public health, and law and order.
