Bihar Government Boosts Social Security Pension to Rs 1,100 for Vulnerable Groups
Increased Pension for Vulnerable Groups in Bihar
On Saturday, Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declared a significant increase in the state's monthly social security pension for the elderly, differently-abled individuals, and widows. The pension will rise from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100, effective from July.
This enhancement is set to benefit over 1.09 crore residents in Bihar, with the chief minister confirming that the funds will be deposited into the beneficiaries' bank accounts by the 10th of each month.
Kumar emphasized the importance of supporting the elderly, stating, "They are a valuable part of our society, and ensuring their dignified living is our utmost priority." He assured that the state government would persist in its efforts to support this demographic.
With assembly elections anticipated in Bihar around October or November, this announcement comes at a crucial time.
Kumar's party, Janata Dal (United), is currently allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar. After not achieving a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP formed the central government with support from the Janata Dal (United) and other members of the National Democratic Alliance. The Lok Janshakti Party, led by Chirag Paswan, is also part of this coalition.
This announcement follows a pledge made by Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav in March to increase the monthly pension to Rs 1,500 under the Mai-Bahin Samman Yojna, as reported by a news outlet. Yadav also promised to provide gas cylinders at Rs 500 and 200 units of free electricity if his party gains power.
