Bihar By-Election Outcome Raises Concerns

Patna, August 4 - Senior leader of the Janata Dal (United) (JD-U) and Bihar government minister, Shravan Kumar, described the results of the Bankipur assembly by-election as 'unexpected' on Tuesday. He stated that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and its allied parties would conduct a thorough review of the reasons behind their defeat. Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraj Party, secured victory in the Bankipur assembly seat, which has long been considered a stronghold for the BJP, having not lost the seat since 1995.

The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of BJP national president Nitin Nabin, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April, leaving the Bankipur assembly seat vacant. Kishor, known for his electoral strategies, garnered 64,151 votes, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by a margin of 19,324 votes. Sinha was a last-minute replacement for the originally announced candidate Abhishek 'Bunty', who withdrew citing 'family reasons'.

Shravan Kumar remarked, 'The outcome of the Bankipur by-election is certainly contrary to our expectations. The NDA, JD(U), and other allied parties will conduct a detailed review. Only after this review will we understand the true reasons for our loss.'

JD(U) MLA Anant Singh claimed that there is a prevailing perception among the public that Nitish Kumar was forcibly removed from the chief minister's position. He stated, 'While this is not accurate, the belief persists that the individual who has worked for their development for so many years was ousted. This perception could also be a factor in the NDA's defeat.'

Singh emphasized that the electorate is paramount and ultimately decides who wins and loses in elections.

Senior JD(U) leader Shyam Rajak also stressed the need for a 'thorough review' of the NDA's defeat in the Bankipur by-election, suggesting that discussions should involve not only leaders but also grassroots workers to formulate a solid action plan. Rajak stated to a media outlet, 'We respect the mandate and congratulate Prashant Kishor on his victory. It is crucial that our review includes the ground-level workers from Bankipur, not just the leaders.'

He asserted that the NDA has consistently worked for the public's development, but if the coalition wishes to regain its footing, it must understand the reasons behind the growing discontent among the populace.

Senior BJP leaders have not issued any statements regarding this matter. However, BJP state president Sanjay Sarawagi had previously stated on Monday, 'We humbly accept the people's decision. We will learn from this defeat. Unlike our opponents, we will not blame EVMs and the election commission for every electoral loss.'
