Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Remarkable Comeback: A Lesson in Consistency
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Return to the Indian Team
Former Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma praised Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to the national team after a four-year hiatus, attributing it to his unwavering consistency and dedication. He emphasized that younger players should take inspiration from Bhuvneshwar's journey.
Bhuvneshwar's international career had been on pause since the T20 World Cup semi-final against England in 2022. Now, at 36, he has been called back for the upcoming five T20 matches against New Zealand starting October 22. The seasoned bowler has participated in 229 matches across all formats, securing 294 wickets with an impressive average of 29.50, including seven five-wicket hauls.
His resurgence in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has been notable, where he took 45 wickets in 31 matches at an average of 22.55, contributing to the team's consecutive titles in 2025 and 2026. In the latest IPL season, he was the second-highest wicket-taker, claiming 28 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 17.89.
In an interview, Mohit expressed his joy over Bhuvneshwar's comeback, highlighting that despite challenges from emerging bowlers and injuries, Bhuvneshwar consistently performed for his state and participated in various leagues, including the UPT20 League, where he was the fifth-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in 11 matches. He also excelled in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, taking eight wickets in seven matches.
Mohit advised young players to understand the significance of consistency, stating that giving up when results seem elusive is counterproductive. He encouraged a commitment to hard work, likening Bhuvneshwar's journey to a personal contract to always give one's best.
He noted that while not playing international cricket can affect a player's mindset, maintaining discipline and consistency is crucial. Bhuvneshwar's dedication to the game, participating in various leagues, has ultimately led to his successful return.
Jasprit Bumrah: A Key Asset for Indian Cricket
Mohit also discussed Jasprit Bumrah's readiness for the 2027 ODI World Cup, despite limited recent ODI play. He believes Bumrah is prepared for the challenge, referring to him as a 'luxury' for Indian cricket.
Bumrah missed the ODIs against West Indies but shone in the Asian Games, helping India secure a gold medal with two wickets in two matches. Mohit expressed confidence in Bumrah's capabilities, stating, 'In all three formats, I don't think there is a bigger bowler than Bumrah.'
He compared Bumrah to luxury clothing that should be preserved for special occasions, emphasizing that the more Bumrah plays, the better he performs. Mohit urged that Bumrah should be allowed to play freely, without undue pressure regarding missed series, as his support team knows best how to manage his fitness and performance.
