Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a leading aluminium manufacturer in India and part of Vedanta Aluminium, welcomed former Indian football captain and esteemed awardee Bhaichung Bhutia at the Khel Academy located in Korba.
This visit signifies a pivotal moment in BALCO's commitment to enhancing sports at the district level by connecting young athletes with role models, structured training, and exposure to high-performance sports standards. The event aimed to mentor and motivate over 100 athletes, emphasizing the significance of technique, discipline, and consistency for a successful sports career.
Overview of Khel Academy
Established in 2024, Khel Academy serves as a residential and day-boarding sports training facility aimed at nurturing young talent in various sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, and swimming. This initiative was launched through a Memorandum of Understanding involving the Korba Municipal Corporation, the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, and BALCO, showcasing a strong collaborative effort towards youth development.
The academy boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure, NIS-certified coaches, sports science support, physiotherapy, medical care, and a comprehensive nutrition program that provides six balanced meals daily. Currently, it trains 100 athletes from Korba, Durg, Bilaspur, and Raipur, quickly establishing itself as a key training center with athletes achieving remarkable results in state and national competitions.

During his address to the young athletes, Bhutia expressed, "It's heartening to witness such a robust emphasis on grassroots sports development at Khel Academy, backed by excellent infrastructure and organized training. To every aspiring athlete, do not let the size of your city limit your dreams. Many who have represented India began their journeys in small towns, fueled by discipline, resilience, and a belief that transcended their circumstances. You now have access to professional guidance and facilities; your future depends on your hard work and belief in yourself."
A Vision for Holistic Development
Ashutosh Pandey highlighted the role of sports in shaping character and purpose among youth, stating, "Sports serve as a powerful medium to channel the energy of young individuals into discipline and focus, fostering their development into contributing members of society. Sugandhit Lakra, a 17-year-old football trainee, shared her experience, saying, "Meeting Bhaichung sir was incredibly motivating for all of us. He spoke about hard work, consistency, and enjoying the sport, which boosted my confidence in pursuing sports seriously. For many of us, it was our first interaction with a national icon, inspiring us to train even harder."
