BCCI Requests KKR to Release Mustafizur Rahman Ahead of IPL 2026
BCCI's Directive to Kolkata Knight Riders
Guwahati, Jan 3: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their roster in preparation for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). This decision comes amid escalating tensions in diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh.
KKR had secured the 30-year-old left-arm pacer for a hefty sum of Rs 9.20 crore, which was significantly higher than his base price of Rs 2 crore, following a competitive bidding process that involved Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals during last month's player auction.
The BCCI has confirmed that KKR is allowed to select a replacement player if necessary.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated on Saturday, "The BCCI has requested Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. They can seek a replacement if needed, and the BCCI will accommodate such requests."
When questioned about the rationale behind this decision, Saikia remarked, "Due to recent developments across the region."
The BCCI has faced increasing pressure regarding the participation of the Bangladeshi cricketer in the IPL, particularly following the recent murder of a Hindu individual in Bangladesh, which has raised concerns in India regarding the safety of minorities in the neighboring nation.
