BCCI Faces Backlash Over Distorted Indian Map During IPL 2026 Qualifier
Controversy Erupts Over IPL Drone Show
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is under fire following a drone display that showcased a distorted map of India during the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on May 26.
RCB secured their place in the finals with a commanding 92-run victory over GT. They set a formidable score of 254/5, largely due to Rajat Patidar's impressive innings of 93 runs off just 33 balls. In response, GT was bowled out for 162 runs in 19.3 overs, despite a commendable effort from Rahul Tewatia, who scored 68 runs off 43 balls.
Jacob Duffy was the standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for 39 runs in four overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/28), Rasikh Salam Dar (2/24), and Krunal Pandya (2/16) also contributed significantly to dismantle GT's batting lineup.
Viral Glitch in Indian Map Display
Despite RCB's victory, the post-match discussions were dominated by a significant technical error during the mid-innings break, where a 25-minute sound and light show was marred by the projection of a severely distorted Indian map.
The laser display erroneously depicted several Indian states, including Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of the North-Eastern states, within the borders of Nepal due to a calibration error. This glaring mistake quickly went viral on social media.

Given the historically sensitive border between India and Nepal, such misrepresentations can escalate into serious geopolitical issues.
Public Outrage Over BCCI's Oversight
The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users criticized the BCCI for its lack of quality control and geographical accuracy during a major sporting event.
Fans expressed their disbelief over how such a significant error could occur during a globally viewed IPL playoff, demanding accountability and stricter oversight to prevent future occurrences.
Hello @IPL & @BCCI What kind of Indian map is this? The premier cricket sporting event in the world is being broadcast from India, and we can’t even show our map correctly? #IPL #India #Cricket pic.twitter.com/6tIBhsUl35
Many users called for an explanation regarding the distorted map, questioning whether it constituted an anti-national act.
Looking Ahead
As RCB prepares for their second consecutive IPL final and fifth overall, the Gujarat Titans will have to navigate through Qualifier 2 for another chance to reach the championship match against the winner of the Eliminator between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and another team.
