BCCI Ensures Transparent Player Fitness Communication Amid Injury Concerns
Clear Communication on Player Rehabilitation
VVS Laxman, the head of BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE), has emphasized that the fitness status of players in rehabilitation is consistently communicated to both the selection committee and team management. He highlighted that this process is transparent and relies on ongoing monitoring.
In light of recent injury issues, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia met with Laxman on Sunday to evaluate the rehabilitation and injury management strategies at the CoE.
During a press conference in Bengaluru, Laxman noted that selectors consult the CoE for fitness updates before finalizing team rosters. The facility evaluates each player's condition and shares the findings with the selection committee chairman, head coaches, and the BCCI. Saikia was present at the press conference alongside BCCI president Mithun Manhas and other senior officials.
"Selectors reach out to the CoE for fitness reports. We gather the current fitness status and send a report to the selection committee chairman or chairperson of the women's selection committee, along with copies to the head coaches of both teams and the BCCI," Laxman explained.
Injury Status of Key Players
Injured Indian players Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy are currently undergoing rehabilitation at the CoE and will miss the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15. Sai Sudharsan is also expected to be sidelined due to injury.
Laxman mentioned that players like Bumrah and Sudharsan were initially selected for the Sri Lanka series pending fitness clearance, with their rehabilitation progress being closely monitored.
"Bumrah and Sai Sudarshan were set to be included in the Sri Lanka squad subject to fitness clearance. As I mentioned earlier, we assess their progress and if it is slow, we inform the selection committee chairman and head coach, which is done seamlessly," he stated.
Understanding the 'Subject to Fitness' Clause
Laxman reiterated the importance of transparency in fitness reporting and the selection process. "There is clarity in all fitness reports and the selection process. At the conclusion of selection, it is clearly stated that these players are chosen subject to fitness," he remarked.
He clarified that when a player is selected under this clause, selectors are aware of alternative options should the player not pass the fitness assessment.
Saikia added that selection meetings occur several weeks prior to a team's departure, making it challenging to ascertain a player's precise fitness status at that time.
"Our selection meetings take place at least three to four weeks before the team travels. Therefore, we cannot know the exact status of a player three weeks prior to selection. This is why the 'subject to fitness' note is included, as that player is undergoing rehabilitation," Saikia explained.
He also mentioned that players are not automatically excluded during the selection process, as their condition may improve before travel or the match.
"We do not outrightly dismiss a player because, by the time travel or the match occurs, they may be fully fit. We do not want to deprive the player of the opportunity. No one can predict that," Saikia added.
Saikia concluded by noting that recovery timelines can differ significantly among players, stating, "As VVS rightly pointed out, the human body is not a machine. Recovery can take anywhere from 14 to 28 days or more."
Currently, India ranks fifth in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 standings, with four wins and four losses in nine matches, achieving a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150.
