BCCI's Commitment to Young Talent

On Thursday, Devajit Saikia, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), expressed the board's intention to nurture young batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The goal is to help him and other emerging talents establish enduring careers akin to that of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The BCCI aims to provide the necessary guidance and support to prevent Sooryavanshi from becoming merely a fleeting sensation.

During a review meeting held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, key figures including Secretary Saikia, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman were present. They discussed various topics, with a focus on closely monitoring Sooryavanshi and other young players to ensure they receive the right support for their international careers.

Saikia emphasized the pride the BCCI feels in promoting a 15-year-old player who is already making waves on the international stage. He stated, "We are very cautious about every step he takes to ensure he does not become a one-series wonder. We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to serve the country like Sachin Tendulkar and other past legends. His progress is being monitored closely by the BCCI."

Sooryavanshi's Impressive Milestones

At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi has already achieved significant milestones in cricket. He recently became the youngest player to score a half-century in the Duleep Trophy, breaking a record that stood for 57 years, at the age of 15 years and 157 days. Additionally, he scored 151 runs in three matches against Zimbabwe, earning his first Player of the Series award as India completed a clean sweep with a 3-0 victory.

Earlier, during the T20I series against England, Sooryavanshi made history by becoming the youngest Indian to debut internationally. His debut followed an outstanding IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 776 runs at an impressive strike rate of 237.30, including one century and five fifties. He led the tournament in runs and set a record with 72 sixes, earning multiple post-season accolades such as the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker, and Super Sixes awards. Furthermore, he had a remarkable ICC Men's Under-19 Cricket World Cup, scoring 439 runs and being named Player of the Tournament, showcasing his vast potential.
