The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is finally set to kick off the first-ever Women's Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) from April 4 to April 14. This exciting tournament will feature three teams, starting in Chattogram and wrapping up in Dhaka, just months ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled for June.

Welcoming Indian Players Despite Tensions

In a notable move, the BCB has announced that Indian players will be allowed to participate in the league, despite previous tensions between the two cricket boards during the Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The diplomatic strain had led to Bangladesh's withdrawal from the tournament after they refused to travel to India. However, with the political landscape shifting following Bangladesh's recent general elections, the WBPL is being viewed as a fresh start.

Inclusivity in Player Participation

Rubaba Dowla, chairperson of the BCB Women’s Wing and the WBPL Governing Council, emphasized that there will be no restrictions on player nationality. "We are open to all," she stated, inviting any interested players and teams to join the league.

Recruitment and Player Earnings

Several international players have already shown interest in joining the league, with recruitment expected to commence shortly. The WBPL will utilize a draft system instead of an auction, featuring structured pay categories for local players. Earnings will range from BDT 10 lakh for icon players to BDT 1.5 lakh for Category D players.

Team Composition and Preparations

Each team is required to include at least two overseas players, with the option to have up to four, following the models of the IPL and WPL. Preparations are in full swing at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, where the first coordination meeting took place this week.
