Bangladesh to Hold National Elections in April 2026
Announcement of Upcoming Elections
On Friday, Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of Bangladesh, declared that the national elections are scheduled for April next year. During a televised speech coinciding with Eid-Al-Azha, he indicated that a comprehensive roadmap for the elections would be provided at a later date.
This announcement marks a significant step towards resolving the ongoing uncertainty and unrest that has persisted since last year, following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government amid widespread student protests.
Yunus stated, "After assessing the current reforms in justice, governance, and the electoral framework, I am informing the nation that the next national election will take place on any day in the first half of April 2026."
