Bangladesh PM Invited to BRICS Outreach Session by India

India has officially invited Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, to participate in the outreach session of the upcoming BRICS summit scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi. This invitation marks a significant diplomatic gesture as India hosts the summit, which will address various global challenges, including the economic impacts of the West Asia crisis. The event is expected to attract several world leaders, enhancing regional cooperation and dialogue. The BRICS group, which includes major emerging economies, continues to expand its influence on the global stage.

Bangladesh Prime Minister's Invitation to BRICS Summit

New Delhi, August 4 - India announced on Tuesday that it has extended an invitation to Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, to participate in the outreach session of the upcoming BRICS summit, where he will represent BIMSTEC as the current chair. The annual BRICS summit is set to take place in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.

According to the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, Rahman was also invited for a bilateral visit to India following his assumption of office in February. During a regular press briefing, he stated that India has specifically invited the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to join the outreach session of the 18th BRICS summit as part of the standard procedure for such events.

Jaiswal further mentioned that leaders from other regional organizations have received similar invitations. Currently, India holds the presidency of BRICS and is hosting this summit, which is expected to see participation from several prominent leaders, including China's President Xi Jinping, Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

BRICS originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates will join, followed by Indonesia in 2025. This group represents 11 major emerging economies, accounting for approximately 49.5% of the global population, nearly 40% of the global GDP, and about 26% of global trade.

India has also invited leaders from several countries outside of BRICS to participate in the outreach session. BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) includes member countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan.
