Bangladesh Issues Nationwide Security Alert Amid Militant Threats

In response to intelligence warnings of potential militant attacks, Bangladesh police have issued a nationwide security alert. The alert highlights possible targets, including the parliament and military facilities, following the arrest of a suspected militant operative. Authorities are ramping up surveillance and security measures across the country, particularly in light of recent extremist activities and jailbreaks. This situation underscores the ongoing challenges Bangladesh faces in maintaining security amid rising threats from militant groups.

Security Alert Issued by Bangladesh Police

Authorities in Bangladesh have declared a nationwide security alert due to intelligence reports suggesting potential militant attacks on critical sites. Officials from the police headquarters indicated that the alert was prompted by specific intelligence, although they refrained from disclosing further details. An anonymous source described the situation as 'urgent and confidential.'

Local media reports indicate that possible targets include the parliament, religious sites, entertainment locations, and military and police installations. Additionally, armories have been flagged as potential targets for coordinated assaults.

This alert comes on the heels of the arrest of Istiak Ahmed Sami, also known as Abu Bakkar, a suspected member of a banned militant group, who reportedly had connections with two former military personnel. The police headquarters document also mentioned profiles of two alleged masterminds behind the planned attacks, labeling them as 'extremely dangerous' to national security.

Law enforcement agencies have cautioned that militant groups might employ various tactics to execute their plans, as reported by local news outlet tbsnews.net. The police headquarters has instructed specialized units, including the Criminal Investigation Department and Counter Terrorism units, to enhance surveillance and readiness. Regular police forces nationwide have also been put on high alert.

A police chief from a western district confirmed the receipt of the alert and stated that security protocols have been intensified in his jurisdiction. Over the past 18 months, Bangladesh has witnessed an uptick in extremist activities, particularly during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, which followed the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government amid widespread protests known as the 'July Uprising.'

Authorities have reported that numerous inmates, including convicted militants, remain unaccounted for following a series of jailbreaks during this tumultuous period. Approximately 2,700 inmates escaped during the unrest, with around 700 still missing. Among those who fled were several militants, and reports of stolen weapons have surfaced as well. Notably, in July 2024, a significant incident occurred when attackers breached a prison in Narsingdi, liberating over 800 inmates and igniting parts of the facility. Another jailbreak at Kashimpur High Security Jail in Gazipur resulted in more than 200 prisoners escaping after guards were taken hostage.
