Bangladesh Cricketers Demand Resignation Amid Controversy
Crisis in Bangladesh Cricket
On Thursday, a significant crisis unfolded in Bangladesh cricket as players threatened to boycott all cricket activities unless M Najmul Islam, a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), stepped down. This situation arose following controversial remarks made by Islam regarding the country's cricketers, as reported by local media.
Players Refuse to Play
During the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), players from Chittagong Royals and Noakhali Express did not take to the field for their scheduled match at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Their refusal was a direct response to the demand for Nazmul Islam's resignation.
Mehidy Hasan Responds to Remarks
At a press conference in Dhaka, cricketer Mehidy Hasan Miraz criticized Islam's comments, labeling them as 'shameful' for the cricket community. He emphasized that the majority of their income is derived from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and sponsorships, stating, "The funds the cricket board has today are a result of everyone's hard work, and every player has a right to it."
Mehidy further explained that if no matches were played, sponsorships would dwindle, and revenue from the ICC would cease. He expressed concern over the implications of Islam's statements, questioning their appropriateness given his position.
Tax Contributions and Misconceptions
He also highlighted that players contribute significantly to the government through taxes, paying around 25-30% of their earnings. "Many believe the government pays us, but all our income comes from playing cricket," he clarified, urging for a better understanding of this issue.
Formal Demands from Players
During the press conference, several key issues were raised, including the crisis in Dhaka First Division cricket, the BCB's handling of sexual harassment allegations against women cricketers, and the demand for Nazmul Islam's resignation. COAB president Mohammad Mithun stated, "We will only return to the field if the BCB commits to removing him within 48 hours; otherwise, the responsibility for halting play lies with the BCB."
Controversial Remarks and Backlash
The situation escalated as the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) issued an ultimatum for Nazmul Islam's resignation, following his derogatory comments about senior players, including former captain Tamim Iqbal. Islam had referred to Iqbal as an 'Indian agent' after Iqbal suggested dialogue to address tensions in cricket relations between Bangladesh and India.
BCB Takes Action
In response to the backlash, the BCB issued a show-cause notice to M Najmul Islam regarding his public comments. The board announced that formal disciplinary proceedings had begun, requiring Islam to submit a written explanation within 48 hours. The BCB assured that the matter would be handled through due process.
