Bangladesh Cricket Board Establishes Election Commission for 2026 Elections
Formation of the Election Commission
On Wednesday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) revealed the establishment of an Election Commission tasked with overseeing the BCB Board of Directors Election scheduled for 2026. This three-member commission will manage all election-related procedures in line with the board's established rules and regulations. Ahsanul Karim, a Senior Advocate at the Bangladesh Supreme Court, has been appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner.
Commission Members
Joining Ahsanul Karim on the panel are Md. Israil Hawlader, the Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, and A. B. M. Ehsanul Mamun, who serves as the Deputy Secretary and Director of Planning & Development at the National Sports Council.
Official Announcement
The BCB confirmed this development through an official media release from Dhaka on Wednesday. The newly formed Election Commission is expected to handle the administrative and procedural elements of the upcoming election for the cricket board's governing body.
Investigation into T20 World Cup Withdrawal
Earlier this week, the Bangladesh government established a three-member committee to investigate the decision to withdraw from the T20 World Cup. Mahbub Ul Alam, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, stated that the committee's purpose is to review the reasons behind Bangladesh's non-participation in the recently concluded T20 World Cup held in India.
Dr. AKM Oli Ullah, Additional Secretary of the Administration Wing at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, will lead the committee, which also includes former National Captain Habibul Bashar Sumon and Barrister Faisal Dastagir, a Supreme Court lawyer and sports organizer.
Committee's Objectives
According to media reports, the committee will investigate the rationale behind the decision to withdraw and assess whether any diplomatic or strategic failures contributed to it. They have been instructed to submit a detailed report to the Ministry within 15 working days.
Security Concerns and ICC's Response
Prior to the tournament, the BCB raised security concerns regarding playing in India and requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate Bangladesh's matches to Sri Lanka. However, the ICC declined this request, stating there was no credible or verifiable threat to the Bangladesh team in India.
As a result, Scotland replaced Bangladesh in the 20-team tournament after the BCB opted out of participating under the published schedule. Following Aminul Haque's appointment as Bangladesh's Minister for Youth and Sports, the government pledged to conduct a formal inquiry into this unprecedented withdrawal to ensure accountability.
