Strengthening Ties: Bangladesh and China Discuss Economic Corridor

Dhaka: In a recent meeting, Bangladesh and China explored potential collaboration on an economic corridor that would connect Bangladesh with Myanmar and China. This discussion took place between Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen and Bangladesh's junior foreign minister, Shama Obaed Islam, as reported by local media.

The meeting, held at the minister's office on Monday, covered various topics including infrastructure development, energy initiatives, human resource training, and broader economic cooperation, according to a press release from the foreign ministry.

Both parties shared insights on mutual interests, particularly focusing on the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, the establishment of a Chinese Economic Zone, and the enhancement of Mongla Port.

This proposed corridor aims to enhance connectivity between Bangladesh and southwestern China via Myanmar, differing from the previously suggested Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Economic Corridor. It could offer Beijing an alternative route for trade and connectivity to the Bay of Bengal.

Additionally, discussions included plans for a 1,000-bed hospital in Rangpur, educational initiatives, human resource development, energy collaboration—especially in renewable energy—and promoting women's empowerment.

The minister reflected on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visit to China, expressing gratitude for China's ongoing support in Bangladesh's development, particularly in infrastructure and human capacity building.

Yao reaffirmed China's commitment to being a reliable partner for Dhaka, noting the significant advancements in their bilateral relations over recent years. He also extended an invitation for the junior foreign minister to visit China with a delegation of Bangladeshi women entrepreneurs, which she welcomed enthusiastically.
