AIUDF Announces Candidates for Upcoming Elections

Guwahati, March 18: Badruddin Ajmal, the president of the AIUDF, is set to run for the Assembly elections on April 9 from the Binnakandi constituency, marking his official return to the political arena in the state.

The AIUDF revealed its second list of 12 candidates for the elections on Tuesday, following the announcement of nine nominees the previous week.

In this latest list, the party has chosen to re-nominate four sitting MLAs. Notably, three candidates from non-Muslim backgrounds have also been included, despite the AIUDF's primary support coming from the Muslim immigrant community.

Alongside Ajmal, the second list features MLAs Hafiz Bashir Ahmed (Goalpara East), Nazrul Hoque (Dhubri), Mazibur Rahman (Dalgaon), and Ashraful Hussain (Chenga).

Other candidates include Abdul Aziz (Samaguri), Shihab Uddin (Karimganj South), Imdad Hussain (Chamaria), Jamsher Talukdar (Golakganj), Musukha Basumatary (Bijni), Mukut Das (Raha-SC), and Dr Anup Kumar Das Talukdar (Ram Krishna Nagar-SC).

This election marks a significant moment for the AIUDF as they are contesting independently after their attempts to join forces with the Congress-led opposition alliance were unsuccessful.

In the previous 2021 Assembly elections, the AIUDF secured 15 seats while part of the Congress-led coalition. However, the alliance was later dissolved when Congress severed ties with Ajmal's party.

The AIUDF faced a significant setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, failing to win any seats, with Ajmal himself losing in Dhubri.
