In a thrilling display of skill, former world junior bronze medallist Ayush Shetty, along with the mixed doubles duo of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani, secured hard-fought victories to progress to the second round of the Indonesia Open badminton tournament on Wednesday. Shetty triumphed over China's Weng Hong Yang with scores of 8-21, 22-20, 21-15, while Rohan and Ruthvika achieved an impressive upset against the world no. 20 pair, Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang from Chinese Taipei, winning 21-14, 21-14.
Shetty's Remarkable Comeback
Ayush Shetty, a bronze medallist at the Thomas Cup 2026, showcased his resilience by coming back from a game down to defeat world no. 15 Weng for the second consecutive time. After losing the first game, Shetty took an early lead in the second, establishing a 4-point advantage at 8-4. Weng quickly closed the gap, reaching his game point, but Shetty rallied back from 19-20 to score three crucial points, forcing a decisive third game. The match, lasting one hour and six minutes, saw Shetty maintain a comfortable lead in the final game. He had previously defeated Weng at the Thomas Cup in April and will next face Lee Cheuk Yiu from Hong Kong, who recently upset the fourth seed, Christo Popov.
