The 2026-27 season of Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) is set to commence in India, with the inaugural match scheduled at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium in December. This announcement was made by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his visit to Australia, alongside India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
First-Ever BBL Match Outside Australia
Cricket Australia has confirmed that the opening match will feature the Melbourne Renegades facing off against the Perth Scorchers in Chennai. This event will be historic as it marks the first BBL game played outside of Australia, officially kicking off the BBL 16 season on December 12. The Melbourne Renegades will be recognized as the home team for this significant match.
New Sports Cooperation Roadmap
During the visit, PM Albanese and PM Modi also introduced a Roadmap on Sport Cooperation, which aims to enhance the sporting relationship between Australia and India. This initiative seeks to leverage Australia's experience in hosting major sporting events alongside India's aspirations in the sports sector, while also fostering new opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment.
The roadmap outlines several collaborative areas, including capacity building, sports science, and technology research, as well as industry investment. It is anticipated to strengthen cooperation in organizing significant international sporting events, with Australia preparing for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and India gearing up for the 2030 Commonwealth Games centenary edition.
Albanese on Enhancing Bilateral Relations
PM Albanese emphasized the shared enthusiasm for sports between Australia and India, stating that the new Sports Roadmap will enhance bilateral relations through collaboration in capability building, technology, and research. He noted that this partnership would also promote trade, tourism, and investment between the two nations.
"Australia and India are united by our love and passion for sport. This sports roadmap will focus on practical priority areas such as capability building, technology, and research to strengthen this cornerstone of our bilateral relationship. I am excited to expand cooperation with India on sport, which not only brings joy to Australians but boosts trade, tourism, and investment," he remarked.
