Australia-India Relations Reach New Heights Amid Regional Tensions
Strengthening Ties Between Australia and India
Philip Green, the Australian High Commissioner to India, has stated that the bilateral relations between Australia and India are at their peak. In a conversation with a news outlet, Green emphasized that both nations are strategically connected through the QUAD alliance and share a common vision for the Indo-Pacific region. He remarked, "Our bilateral relations are at their highest point... We are deeply connected through the QUAD, and we have a shared vision for the Indo-Pacific at the bilateral level. Our economies complement each other and are robust... Another aspect of our relationship is what we refer to as the 'Human Bridge.' Over a million individuals who consider Australia their home significantly contribute to our bilateral ties."
Historical Depth of Australia-India Relations
Brigadier Damian Hill, head of the Australian Defence Staff in India, echoed Green's sentiments, noting the long-standing nature of their relationship. He mentioned that their 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' has been in place for nearly four years, but the roots of their relationship run much deeper. As the situation in the Middle East creates fluctuations in the global economy, Green highlighted Australia's call for de-escalation. The Australian government is advocating for reduced tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and throughout the West Asia region, which is causing ripples worldwide. This impact is felt in Australia and India alike. Green stressed the importance of dialogue, stating that the sooner involved parties can reach an agreement and restore normal passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the better it will be for everyone.
Advocating for Peace and Stability
Hill informed that efforts are underway to reduce tensions, advocating for a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region that allows everyone to coexist harmoniously. He expressed the desire for stability in the region, emphasizing that it is in the best interest of the entire world to maintain a peaceful community. The effects of instability extend beyond Asia or the Middle East, impacting everyone globally. Earlier, on April 18, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for de-escalation in West Asia and the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, stressing the need to keep this maritime route toll-free and free from privatization amid ongoing conflicts.
