Assembly By-Election Results Announced in Gujarat, Kerala, West Bengal, and Punjab
Vote Counting Underway for Assembly By-Elections
The results for the assembly by-elections held in five constituencies across Gujarat, Kerala, West Bengal, and Punjab are set to be announced today (June 23), as the counting of votes is currently taking place under tight security. Early trends indicate that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading in Ludhiana West and Visavadar, while the Congress is ahead in Nilambur, the BJP in Kadi, and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kaliganj. The by-elections were conducted on June 19 due to the passing of current legislators in Gujarat, West Bengal, and Punjab, and the resignation of two legislators led to voting in another seat in Kerala and Gujarat. The Nilambur constituency in Kerala recorded the highest voter turnout at 75.27%, while Ludhiana West in Punjab had the lowest at 51.33%. Voter turnout was 57.91% in Kadi, 56.89% in Visavadar, and 73.36% in Kaliganj.
West Bengal: TMC Takes Early Lead in Kaliganj
In the Kaliganj assembly constituency of Nadia district, the counting of votes for the by-election is ongoing, with the Trinamool Congress candidate establishing an early lead over competitors. Election Commission officials reported that after the first round of counting, TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed secured 4,545 votes, while her closest rival, the Congress candidate supported by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Kabil Uddin Sheikh, garnered 1,830 votes. The BJP candidate, Ashish Ghosh, is in third place with 1,112 votes. The counting process began at 8 AM with postal ballots, and officials confirmed that the counting is proceeding smoothly amidst strict security. The by-election was necessitated by the sudden death of TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed in February, and his daughter Alifa Ahmed (38) is contesting as the TMC candidate. The voter turnout in Kaliganj was recorded at 69.85% by 5 PM on June 19, with the voting largely peaceful aside from minor incidents.
Kerala: Congress Candidate Shaukat Leads in Nilambur
In the Nilambur constituency of northern Kerala, the counting of votes for the by-election is ongoing, with the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shaukat, representing the Congress-led opposition alliance, maintaining a lead over the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj from the CPI(M). According to Election Commission data, by the end of the seventh round of counting, Shaukat had established a lead of 5,123 votes over Swaraj, a member of the CPI(M) state secretariat. The performance of independent candidate P. V. Anwar, a two-time MLA, has been notably strong, surprising both UDF and LDF supporters. Counting commenced at 8 AM at Chungathara Mar Thoma Higher Secondary School, starting with postal ballots, followed by electronic voting machine (EVM) votes at 8:10 AM. The by-election was necessitated by the resignation of MLA P. V. Anwar, and the contest is seen as a mid-term examination for the LDF government, which is in its fourth year. A victory for the UDF here would boost its morale ahead of next year's assembly elections.
Gujarat: BJP Leads in Kadi, AAP Narrowly Ahead in Visavadar
In Gujarat, the counting of votes for two assembly by-elections is underway, with AAP candidate Gopal Italia slightly ahead in Visavadar, while BJP's Rajendra Chavda leads in Kadi. The BJP, Congress, and AAP fielded candidates in both constituencies during the by-elections held on June 19. The Visavadar seat became vacant after former AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani resigned to join the ruling BJP in December 2023. The Kadi constituency, reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC), was vacated following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki in February. According to the data shared by the Election Commission, Italia received 7,179 votes, while his closest rival, BJP candidate Kirit Patel, secured 6,788 votes in the two phases of counting. In Kadi, BJP's Rajendra Chavda is leading with 12,701 votes, while Congress's Ramesh Chavda has 6,949 votes. The voter turnout was 57.90% in Kadi and 56.89% in Visavadar during the by-elections, with counting starting at 8 AM.
Ludhiana West: AAP's Sanjeev Arora Leads in Early Trends
In Punjab's Ludhiana West assembly constituency, early trends from the vote counting indicate that AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora is leading over his closest rival, Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, by a margin of 1,269 votes. After the first phase of counting, Arora received 2,895 votes, while Ashu garnered 1,626 votes. BJP's Jeevan Gupta is in third place with 1,117 votes. The counting for the by-election, necessitated by the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Goggi in January, began at a center established at Khalsa College for Women at 8 AM. The voter turnout for this by-election was recorded at 51.33%, significantly lower than the 64% turnout in the 2022 assembly elections, with 14 candidates contesting.
