The Immigration Challenge in Assam

In recent years, the issue of immigration has emerged as a significant political topic during elections across various states. However, in Assam, this concern has been prevalent since the country gained independence. The state's first Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, took a strong stance against immigration by implementing strict laws in 1950. Now, nearly 75 years post-independence, the citizens of Assam are beginning to feel a renewed sense of hope regarding this issue. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leveraging this optimism in its quest for a third consecutive term in the state.



Addressing the Immigration Issue


This is why immigration tops the BJP's manifesto. In the first cabinet meeting of the new government, the party is not only promising to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) but also to completely remove illegal immigrants. The government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma has already taken steps to reclaim 1.5 lakh bighas of land from illegal occupants, signaling a firm stance against immigration.

Assam is the only state in the country where the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was implemented in 1951. However, over time, the trust in this system has diminished. Previously, the issue of illegal immigration was often relegated to mere electoral rhetoric, with the Congress party and others promising to resolve it.



The BJP has transformed this topic into one of 'identity and security,' accusing the Congress party of encouraging illegal immigration for electoral gains. In response, the Congress dismisses these claims as mere election tactics. The BJP has pledged to identify and expel illegal immigrants if they return to power.
