Significant Hydrocarbon Discovery in Assam


Guwahati, July 16: On Wednesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Oil India Limited (OIL) has identified hydrocarbons at the Namrup Borhat-1 well located in Dibrugarh district, where the state government holds a considerable interest.


Sarma characterized this finding as a pivotal advancement for both energy security and economic stability.


In a social media update, he stated, "@OilIndiaLimited has discovered hydrocarbon presence in Namrup Borhat-1 well, a well where the Government of Assam holds a significant stake."


The Chief Minister emphasized that this discovery will facilitate successful investments in oil drilling and bolster national energy security.


He further noted, "This discovery positions Assam as the first state government to directly produce oil, validates our exploration initiatives, enhances Assam's revenue and royalty, and guarantees a consistent energy supply for the nation," in his social media post.


Sarma referred to the discovery as a "moment of pride."


Assam is responsible for 12% of India's natural gas reserves and contributes 50% of the country's onshore natural gas production, establishing itself as a vital player in the national energy sector.
