Assam's Foreigners Tribunal Orders Expulsion of Two Women

In a significant development, a Foreigners’ Tribunal in Assam has ordered two women to leave the state within 24 hours after being declared foreigners. This directive, issued by the Biswanath District Commissioner, highlights ongoing efforts to manage illegal immigration in the region. The women, currently detained, must exit using specified routes, or face coercive action. This incident follows a similar expulsion of 15 individuals in Nagaon, as the state government intensifies its pushback policy against illegal immigrants. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reported that over 30,000 illegal immigrants have been expelled from Assam, emphasizing the government's commitment to addressing this issue.

Expulsion Orders Issued in Assam

Biswanath, Dec 21: A Foreigners’ Tribunal in Assam's Biswanath district has mandated that two women, identified as foreigners, must exit the state within a 24-hour timeframe, with the deadline set for Sunday.

One of the women, Asamul Khatun, also referred to as Asmal Begum, resides in Mishamari under the Helem police jurisdiction and is married to Md Ayub Ali.

The second woman, Afuja Begum, known as Arfuja Begum, hails from Bokrapatta under the Chatiya police station and is the spouse of Jabed Ali.

The expulsion directive was issued by the District Commissioner of Biswanath on Saturday, in accordance with the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act of 1950.

The order requires both women to leave Assam, India, within 24 hours of receiving the notice, utilizing the Dhubri, Sribhumi, or South Salmara–Mankachar routes.

Currently, both women are held at the detention facility in Goalpara. The order emphasized that their presence in Assam, having been classified as foreign nationals, poses a risk to public safety and the state's internal security.

The notice cautioned that non-compliance within the specified period would lead to coercive measures, allowing the government to enforce their removal under the Act.

This incident follows a similar expulsion order issued on December 18 by the Nagaon district administration, which affected 15 individuals deemed foreigners by various Foreigners’ Tribunals after they could not prove their Indian citizenship.

These individuals were from villages under police stations such as Raha, Kaliabor, Samaguri, and Rupahi.

In September, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that over 30,000 illegal immigrants had been expelled from Assam to date.

Sarma stated, 'We have pushed back nearly 30,000 foreigners so far, with the total reaching 30,120,' during a press conference in Guwahati.

He clarified that this figure is cumulative and not limited to a specific period.

Previously, on August 30, the state government reported that expulsions under the newly implemented pushback policy had surpassed 450.

While the Chief Minister did not detail the sectors involved, officials indicated that most recent pushbacks occurred in Assam’s Sribhumi district, which borders Bangladesh.
