Assam's Bao Rice Gains Global Recognition with Successful Exports
Growing Popularity of Bao Rice
Jorhat, Jan 9: A newly developed variety of red kernelled bao rice, known as bao dhaan, has gained significant traction in international markets, with 265 tonnes shipped to Russia and Dubai in 2025.
This milestone was celebrated during the ‘Mega Farmers’ Fair–2026’, a two-day event that commenced on Friday at the Jorhat campus of Assam Agricultural University (AAU).
The success in exports highlights a renewed interest in bao dhaan, a traditional deep-water rice from Assam that had experienced a decline in cultivation over the years.
During the fair, AAU presented five enhanced varieties of bao rice, developed by its Zonal Research Station in North Lakhimpur, attracting considerable interest from farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs from Assam and neighboring Northeastern states.
Dr. Yater Das, a scientist specializing in plant breeding and genetics at the AAU-Zonal Research Station, emphasized the climate resilience of bao dhaan.
“Bao dhaan is traditionally cultivated in deep water and exhibits remarkable resilience to climate variations. It is grown organically, free from fertilizers and pesticides, and is rich in essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and antioxidants,” she explained.
Dr. Das further noted that ongoing research and awareness initiatives have rekindled interest in this crop. “Farmers had nearly abandoned bao rice cultivation. Through events like this, we aim to raise awareness,” she stated.
She mentioned that five improved varieties have been developed, including Padumoni, Panchanan, Basudev, Panindra, and Padmanath, all of which are flood-resistant and better adapted to changing climatic conditions.
The new varieties promise higher yields, enhanced resistance to adverse weather, and reduced vulnerability to diseases that typically affect traditional bao rice.
Officials highlighted that bao rice is also utilized in making flattened rice (chira) and pitha flour, which boosts its market value and export potential.
During the event, AAU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Bidyut Chandan Deka remarked on the university's commitment to hosting the mega farmers’ fair annually.
“We have seen a turnout of at least a thousand people this morning, and we anticipate participation from around 8,000 to 10,000 farmers, including those from Nagaland and Meghalaya,” he noted.
Dr. Deka mentioned that the fair will showcase 118 modern agricultural technologies and outlined various programs planned for the event, including a traditional Bhaona performance on the final day.
The Mega Farmers’ Fair–2026 features agricultural exhibitions, training sessions, live demonstrations, interactions between farmers and scientists, meetings for agri-entrepreneurs, and seed growers, all aimed at empowering the farming community.
In addition to farmers, representatives from state, national, and international government institutions, private organizations, farmer-producer organizations, and self-help groups involved in agriculture and related sectors are participating in the event.
The program is chaired by Dr. Deka, with Dr. Jyotiprasad Saikia, Vice-Chancellor of Jagannath Barua University, serving as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony. Dr. Saikia emphasized the importance of recognizing farmers' dignity and instilling confidence within the agricultural community.
