Assam's Ambitious Plans to Become an Energy-Surplus State

Transforming Assam's Power Sector

Guwahati, June 19: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Friday that the state is significantly increasing its investments in the power sector, aiming to turn Assam into an energy-surplus region. This initiative includes the construction of 16 new substations and the addition of nearly 1,000 circuit kilometers of transmission lines.

Sarma emphasized the ongoing expansion of the state's power infrastructure, stating that the government is dedicated to enhancing generation, transmission, and distribution networks to provide a consistent electricity supply throughout Assam.

“Our goal is to establish Assam as an energy surplus state by accelerating investments in the power sector. We are increasing the number of stations, enhancing capacity, and expanding lines to ensure reliable power reaches every home,” the Chief Minister shared on social media.

As per the data provided by Sarma, Assam currently operates 82 substations with a total grid capacity of 10,000 MVA. The state's transmission network has grown to 5,300 circuit kilometers (CKM), improving its power evacuation and distribution capabilities.

In the next phase of development, the government plans to set up 16 additional substations across the state, which are projected to contribute an extra 6,340 MVA to the grid capacity, thereby significantly bolstering Assam's electricity transmission framework.

Furthermore, the state is preparing to launch 957 CKM of new transmission lines to enhance connectivity between power generation sites and demand centers, while also alleviating transmission constraints.

This announcement comes as Assam aims to upgrade its power infrastructure to accommodate the increasing electricity demand resulting from industrial expansion, urban growth, and the ongoing electrification of rural areas.

Officials have asserted that enhancing transmission capacity and ensuring grid reliability are vital for supporting the state's long-term economic growth goals and attracting new industrial investments.

This latest initiative is part of the government's comprehensive strategy to establish Assam as a key economic center in the Northeast through improved infrastructure and a stable power supply.

Reaffirming the government's dedication, the Chief Minister stated that the current projects are designed to provide dependable and high-quality electricity services to households, businesses, and industries throughout the state.
