Guwahati, Sept 16: Joi Barua, a renowned Assamese singer and composer, has embarked on an exciting international project that blends NASA's astrophysics with the performing arts, bringing forth two songs that celebrate the mysteries of the universe.

This initiative is part of NASA's COSI (Compton Spectrometer and Imager) mission, spearheaded by John Tomsick at UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory, and is linked to the global orchestral and multimedia endeavor known as Cosmic Rhapsody.

Cosmic Rhapsody was developed by the creative duo Susan Lim and Christina Teenz Tan, with French composer Manu Martin taking the lead as the chief composer and orchestrator for the entire orchestral piece, as noted by Barua.

Barua shared, "I composed melodies for two key songs - 'Star Among the Cosmic Clouds' and 'Confetti Storm', and co-created 'Confetti Star-Ion' with Manu Martin. This global creative collaboration has been an incredible experience for me."

He emphasized the cultural significance of both music and the cosmos in India, alongside the scientific advancements made by ISRO.

"Being an Indian composer contributing to a project in partnership with NASA's COSI mission is a humbling experience. It conveys a powerful message to aspiring dreamers in India - that logic and creativity can coexist. When science and the performing arts unite, the universe becomes your canvas," he remarked.

This collaboration is designed as an immersive experience that combines live symphonic music, cinematic animation, and popular songs, narrating a fictional tale of a human and an AI journeying through space to find solutions to Earth's environmental challenges.

During a visit to the Space Sciences Laboratory, the creators realized that the climax of Cosmic Rhapsody, featuring 'Star Among the Cosmic Clouds' and 'Confetti Storm', which depicts a dying star's explosion showering stardust back to Earth, aligns closely with NASA's COSI mission, which studies soft gamma rays to understand how supernovae create the elements essential for life.

Barua explained, "John Tomsick and the COSI team are launching a space telescope to trace soft gamma rays and identify the stellar factories where elements like iron and aluminum originate. Knowing that our songs, born from deep emotion and poetry, resonate with the actual astrophysics of nucleosynthesis validates our entire collaboration."

The project will feature two significant launches: the US premiere of Cosmic Rhapsody at the Hollywood Bowl on July 27, 2027, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and renowned pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, followed by the orbital launch of NASA's COSI mission from Cape Canaveral.

Barua expressed that one of the most rewarding aspects of this project is the creative partnership with Samudra Kajal Saikia, an animator and director responsible for the visuals, who also comes from Assam.

"Having two artists from Assam contribute to the auditory and visual essence of a global project aligned with NASA is incredibly special. While I crafted melodic arcs to celebrate the exploding star, Samudra translated those musical dynamics into vibrant, swirling colors of cosmic stardust frame-by-frame. This marks a significant cultural achievement for our home state on an international platform," Barua concluded.
