International Acclaim for Assamese Cinema

Guwahati, Mar 1: The Assamese film Moi Eti Nixhasor, which explores the life of a thief against the backdrop of Assam's socio-political environment, has been honored with the Award of Excellence Special Mention at the Accolade Global Film Competition.

Directed by the acclaimed National Award-winning filmmaker Bidyut Kotoky, this film is inspired by a true story penned by senior journalist Anuradha Sharma Pujari.

The Award of Excellence Special Mention is a notable accolade within the US-based Accolade Global Film Competition, recognized by Movie Maker magazine as one of the top 25 festivals worth entering, according to Kotoky.

This prestigious recognition places the film among the top 10 entries in the competition, a distinction reserved for projects that exemplify exceptional artistry and technical skill, Kotoky highlighted.

He further noted that this acknowledgment reinforces the idea that human emotions transcend man-made borders.

"Set in a remote Assamese village and reflecting on recent history, this narrative serves as a reminder of the social and political hurdles faced globally today," the director remarked.

Moi Eti Nixhasor (Koduwa the Nightbird) tells the story of Koduwa, a clever village thief whose honest efforts to better his life are thwarted by local authorities.

"We are truly grateful for this recognition from such a prestigious global platform. This award is a tribute to the entire creative team that brought Koduwa's story to life. By the film's conclusion, viewers are left pondering - who is the real thief?" he stated.

The lead role is portrayed by renowned theatre actor Gunomoni Baruah, alongside a talented ensemble of senior and junior artists from the Assamese film industry.

Kotoky also mentioned that the film has been selected for the Covellite International Film Festival 2026 in the USA.

"After viewing Moi Eti Nixhasor at Covellite, filmmakers described it as a 'delightful little celebration' with strong audience engagement. While it may not be as prominent as Cannes or Sundance, it is well-respected for its quality and commitment to showcasing independent films globally," he added.

Although no specific release date was provided, Kotoky expressed confidence that once the film is commercially launched in Assam in the coming months, it will receive a warm reception from the local audience.

The film is produced by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in collaboration with Red River & Blue Hills.
