Guwahati Hit-and-Run Incident

Guwahati: Nandini Kashyap, an actress from Assam, has been taken into custody following a tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a 21-year-old engineering student. She is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, as confirmed by officials.

The actress's two-day police custody has concluded, and she will be presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup district.

Sources from the police indicate that the agency will contest Kashyap's bail application and seek an extension of her custody.

In light of the incident, a well-known theatre group in Guwahati has terminated its contract with Kashyap.

The victim, Samiul Haque, suffered severe injuries in the hit-and-run and passed away on Tuesday evening, leading to Kashyap's arrest.

The accident took place early on July 26 in the Dakshingaon area of the city, where it is reported that Kashyap did not stop to assist the injured student but fled the scene.

Samiul was returning home from a part-time job at a streetlight installation site when he was allegedly hit by a Bolero SUV.

Kashyap had initially reported to the police on the morning of July 26, was questioned, and subsequently released on a Personal Recognisance (PR) bond.

She was called back for further questioning on July 27 and was released again.

Her arrest occurred shortly after Samiul's death in the hospital on Tuesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Jayanta Sarathi Borah, informed the media that traffic authorities were not aware of the incident on the night it happened.

"A Bolero struck a scooty rider on the night of July 25. The following morning, the woman came to the police station and was allowed to leave on a PR bond. A notice was issued for her to appear as required," Borah stated.

An FIR was later lodged by the victim's family, although it did not initially name the accused.

Police confirmed that Kashyap's involvement was established on July 26.

Initially, charges under Sections 115(2), 125, and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were filed. After the victim's death, Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was added.

Authorities have requested an examination of the vehicle believed to be involved from the Forensic Science Laboratory and are analyzing CCTV footage from the vicinity.

DCP Borah also mentioned that Kashyap underwent a medical examination following her arrest.

"Since she voluntarily appeared before the police on July 26, there was no immediate requirement for a medical check-up at that time," he added.

The family of the victim has expressed their concerns regarding Kashyap's actions, claiming she neither stopped to help Samiul after the accident nor visited him during his hospitalization.
