Voter List Draft Released by Election Commission

On Saturday, the Election Commission unveiled the draft of the voter list, revealing that more than 1.05 million names have been removed from the voter registry in Assam following a special revision. With assembly elections approaching in less than six months, the integrated draft list indicates that there are a total of 25,109,754 voters in the state, excluding 93,021 suspected voters. The removal of names, totaling 1,056,291, is attributed to reasons such as death, relocation, or duplicate entries.

Understanding 'D-Voters' in Assam

'D-Voters' in Assam represent a specific group of voters who have been denied voting rights due to alleged deficiencies in citizenship documentation. The designation of 'D-Voter' is determined by special tribunals under the Foreigners Act of 1946, and individuals classified as 'D-Voters' do not receive voter cards. All relevant details concerning 'D-Voters,' including names, ages, and photographs, have been included in the draft voter list without alterations. The draft list was published following a verification process conducted door-to-door from November 22 to December 20.

Claims and Objections Timeline

The Election Commission has announced that voters can submit claims and objections until January 22, with the final voter list set to be published on February 10. Among the 1.05 million names removed, 478,992 were due to death, 523,680 voters had moved from their registered addresses, and 53,619 entries were identified for correction due to demographic discrepancies. The verification of the voter list was conducted across 6,103,103 households, involving 35 District Election Officers (DEOs), 126 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), 1,260 Assistant EROs, 29,656 Booth Level Officers (BLOs), and 2,578 BLO supervisors.

Political Party Involvement

Political parties have deployed 61,533 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to assist and monitor this process. While a special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists is ongoing in 12 states and union territories, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, the Election Commission has mandated a special revision in Assam.
