Assam to Initiate Special Intensive Revision of Voter Rolls After Elections

Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has revealed plans for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls to take place after the Assembly elections. This initiative aims to ensure a comprehensive and effective update of the electoral list, following the previous Special Revision. The announcement comes in light of the ongoing discussions surrounding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and its implications for the state's electorate.

Commencement of Special Intensive Revision

Sivasagar, Feb 5: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls will commence following the Assembly elections.

He emphasized that the upcoming SIR will be conducted thoroughly and effectively. Sarma mentioned, "I had urged the Election Commission to initiate the SIR earlier, but they opted for a Special Revision (SR) due to the pending publication of the NRC. We are in favor of the SIR process."

The final National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published on August 31, 2019, which excluded 1,906,657 individuals. Out of 3,302,766 applicants, 3,112,100 names were included, but it has yet to be officially notified by the Registrar General of India.

The draft electoral roll following the SR indicated a total of 25,201,624 voters, marking a 1.35% increase from the final roll released in January 2025.

From January 6 to December 27 of the previous year, there were 786,841 additions and 447,196 deletions. The SR process identified 478,992 deceased voters and 523,680 voters who had moved. Additionally, 53,619 duplicate entries were found, according to officials.

The Election Commission clarified that these names have not been removed yet and will only be processed for deletion or adjustment once formal applications are submitted during the current claims and objections period.

The final electoral roll is set to be published on February 10.
