GUWAHATI, Sept 5: The Assam government is poised to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its educational framework, with plans to train approximately 100,000 teachers by May 2027.

On Friday, Samagra Shiksha, Assam, formalized partnerships with six organizations, including Google AI, IIT Madras-Bodhan AI, and Canva Education, to enhance technology-driven teaching methods, personalized learning experiences, and assessment tools throughout the state's educational institutions. These agreements also aim to reintegrate out-of-school adolescents, especially girls, into the education system via open-schooling initiatives.

State Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu was present at the signing event held at the State Mission Office of Samagra Shiksha, where the Mission Director and representatives from the partner organizations finalized the agreements.

Through its collaboration with Google AI, teachers will be provided with secure digital identities and access to AI tools such as Notebook and Gemini, which will assist in lesson planning and administrative tasks. Training resources will be available in multiple languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Hindi, and English, with Google collaborating with the State Council of Educational Research and Training and the District Institutes of Education and Training to implement the program.

A significant aspect of this initiative involves IIT Madras-Bodhan AI, which will train around 100,000 teachers responsible for classes 6 to 12 by May 31, 2027. The training will commence with 40 master trainers who will subsequently train other educators using a cascade model. Teachers will learn to leverage AI for lesson planning, content creation, and assessment design, with evaluations conducted through the DIKSHA portal. They will also gain access to Bodhan AI’s multilingual teacher assistant bot, capable of generating lesson plans, worksheets, and revision materials, all of which will require teacher approval.

LEHS-Wadhwani AI will create an AI-based oral reading fluency assessment system for students in classes 3 to 8, while EkStep’s Assisted Language and Math Learning platform will provide tailored support in reading and mathematics for the same grades by developing individual learning profiles.

Canva Education will initially collaborate with 70 schools to foster digital literacy, visual communication, and design thinking, aiding teachers in crafting lesson plans and classroom resources while emphasizing responsible and age-appropriate AI usage.

The sixth partnership, with Foundation to Educate Girls Globally, will concentrate on identifying and enrolling out-of-school adolescents aged 15 to 18, particularly girls, through the Assam State Open School and the National Institute of Open Schooling, offering support for mock tests and vocational opportunities.

The state government expressed that these six partnerships will contribute to creating a more inclusive and technology-driven educational system while enhancing teachers' skills and improving student learning outcomes.
