Significant Literary Announcements in Jorhat

Jorhat, Dec 3: On Wednesday, the Assam Sahitya Sabha introduced a range of groundbreaking literary and cultural projects, including a revised and detailed history of Assam and its people.

These announcements were made during the second day of the centenary festivities at the historic Chandrakanta Handique Bhawan.

Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami, the Sabha President, emphasized the need to fill historical gaps concerning Assam and the Northeast.

“Historians have often overlooked the northeastern region of Assam. Hence, the Assam Sahitya Sabha is set to publish an updated Assamese history along with the history of Assam,” he stated during a press briefing.

In a significant move to embrace digital creativity, Dr. Goswami revealed that the Sabha plans to compile literary works shared on social media into curated book collections.

Selected poems, stories, essays, plays, and novels that have been published online will be formally released across various genres.

“This initiative will formally acknowledge creative works emerging from digital platforms,” he remarked, highlighting the growing prominence of contemporary literature beyond traditional print mediums.

As part of its technological integration efforts, the Sabha will launch the first edition of the Chandra Kanta Dictionary on social media.

This digital dictionary will help users identify misspelled words and provide instant corrections.

“It will be a great aid for students. If a word is misspelled, it will be highlighted with a red underline, and users can easily find the correct spelling with a click,” Dr. Goswami explained.

Reiterating the Sabha’s commitment to progress, Dr. Goswami stated that the organization will continue to leverage technology to safeguard and promote Assamese language and culture.

“The Assam Sahitya Sabha will always stay ahead,” he asserted.

The Sabha also announced that its flagship journal, Asam Sahitya Sabha Patrika, is set to celebrate its centenary in 2026.

To commemorate this milestone, the organization has initiated a year-long program aimed at supporting young writers, along with the publication of a commemorative volume titled Jorhator Prokaxan.

The centenary celebration saw the participation of notable writers, former Sabha presidents, secretaries, and cultural scholars, marking a pivotal moment in Assam’s literary history.
