Guwahati, June 29: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police has successfully dismantled a sophisticated fake government job scheme that reportedly defrauded numerous unemployed individuals out of significant amounts of money by falsely promising positions within the Water Resources Department through counterfeit appointment letters and fraudulent recruitment documents.
Authorities have detained seven individuals in connection with this case, which is believed to be part of a larger, organized network operating across various districts in the state.
As per CID reports, the suspects allegedly amassed large sums from job seekers by misleading them into believing they were being offered legitimate government roles.
"The accused, functioning as part of a well-structured racket, reportedly deceived aspiring job candidates out of considerable funds. Victims were led to think they were receiving authentic government job offers," stated a CID representative.
A case has been filed at the CID Police Station, registered as Case No. 04/25, under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The most recent arrest occurred on June 27, when Gunamoni Baishya was taken into custody in Nalbari district.
The CID is investigating the possibility of a broader network, scrutinizing financial transactions, counterfeit documents, and potential connections to other suspects.
Authorities have indicated that additional arrests may occur as the investigation continues.
Investigators revealed that the suspects utilized forged appointment letters, fake government seals, and bogus recruitment announcements that appeared to be issued by the Water Resources Department to lend credibility to their scheme.
The scam was exposed after several victims filed complaints upon realizing that the appointment letters and recruitment processes were fraudulent.
In light of this incident, Assam Police has urged job seekers to confirm the legitimacy of all government recruitment announcements through official sources and cautioned against making any payments to individuals or intermediaries for job placements.
"The public is strongly advised to verify the authenticity of any government recruitment notice through official channels and to refrain from making any payment in exchange for government employment," the CID emphasized.
