Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi Resigns from Congress, Joins BJP Ahead of Elections

In a notable political shift, Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from Congress and joined the BJP ahead of the state assembly elections. Resignation Accepted by Lok Sabha Speaker

On March 24, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accepted the resignation of Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi. Bordoloi, who has served two terms in Parliament, switched from Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prior to the state assembly elections. According to an official statement, his resignation became effective on March 20. He had resigned from Congress on March 17 and formally joined the BJP the following day, marking a significant shift in Assam's pre-election political landscape.


BJP Announces Candidacy in Dispur

The BJP quickly decided to field Bordoloi from the high-profile Dispur constituency, announcing his candidacy in their initial list of 88 candidates. Dispur, the administrative headquarters of the state, is expected to see intense competition. Expressing gratitude towards the BJP leadership, Bordoloi stated that he did not seek any position upon joining the party. His decision was driven by a desire to play a more meaningful role in public life.


Bordoloi's Political Background

In discussions with reporters, Bordoloi emphasized that he did not ask for anything from the BJP when he made his decision to join. He simply sought a platform to work and contribute significantly. Highlighting his political experience, he mentioned that he has served as an MLA four times and held ministerial positions for nearly 15 years under the Congress government led by Tarun Gogoi. He has also represented the Nagaon constituency in the Lok Sabha for two consecutive terms.


Collaboration with Chief Minister

Bordoloi expressed his eagerness to work alongside Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, recalling their previous collaborations in government. He described this partnership as effective in promoting development and addressing challenges related to extremism, and he would welcome the opportunity to collaborate again. Regarding his prospects in Dispur, he mentioned that he would approach voters with utmost humility, aiming to earn their trust as a BJP candidate. He highlighted job creation and improving living standards as key points of his election campaign, while also supporting the state government's development agenda.
