Guwahati, Jul 5: Starting from the upcoming Budget Session on Monday, Hindi will be recognized as an official language in the Assam Legislative Assembly, alongside Assamese, English, and Bodo, as announced by Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass.

During a press briefing, Dass revealed that this decision was made during a meeting of the General Purpose Committee held on Saturday.

He stated, "The meeting concluded that Hindi would be introduced as an official language in the Assembly, in addition to Assamese, English, and Bodo."

Elaborating on this choice, the Speaker remarked, "Recognizing Hindi as a 'Rashtra Bhasa' reflects our respect for the language, which is why we have decided to include it in the Assembly proceedings."

In addition, Dass announced that ALA TV, which broadcasts the Assembly sessions, will be rebranded as "Assam Bidhan Sabha TV."

On another note, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed rumors regarding the potential removal of Bodo as an official language in the Assembly.

In a social media update, Sarma confirmed that the Speaker assured him there were no plans to eliminate Bodo from the Assembly's official languages.

He emphasized, "Bodo is an integral part of Assam's cultural heritage and identity. It embodies the history, traditions, and aspirations of the Bodo community, contributing to the rich diversity of our state."

Sarma reiterated the government's commitment to preserving and promoting the Bodo language, stating, "The Government of Assam is dedicated to supporting the growth of the Bodo language and ensuring its vitality for future generations."

Bodo is recognized in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and was designated as an Associate Official Language of the Assam Legislative Assembly through the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Act, 2020.
