Assam Legislative Assembly Passes Landmark Uniform Civil Code Bill
Historic Session Concludes with Key Legislation
Guwahati: The inaugural session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly wrapped up on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone with the passage of the 'Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill 2026'.
Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass highlighted that the five-day session was filled with notable activities, including the swearing-in of newly elected MLAs and the governor's address.
On the opening day, pro-tem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary administered the oath to the legislators, while BJP leader Dass was elected as the Speaker on the same day.
The following day, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya delivered a speech to the Assembly.
During this session, two important Bills were passed, including the pivotal legislation for the implementation of the UCC in Assam.
Additionally, the Assembly adopted a government resolution advocating for the swift implementation of 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures, contingent upon the completion of delimitation.
Speaker Dass remarked on the significance of the session, stating, 'The very first session of the new Assembly witnessed important business being conducted,' before adjourning the proceedings sine die.
