Guwahati, June 19: The Assam Legislative Assembly has announced the provisional agenda for its upcoming Budget session, which is scheduled to commence on July 6 and conclude on July 31. This session will feature a total of 16 working days.

On July 10, Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah will present the comprehensive State Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27.

Additionally, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that Dr. Habbey Teron, a first-time BJP legislator from the Amri (ST) constituency, will be the ruling NDA's nominee for the Deputy Speaker position.

“I am delighted to announce that Dr. Habbey Teron, the Hon’ble MLA from Amri (ST), will be our candidate for the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly,” Sarma shared on X.

Dr. Teron, a trained medical professional and the inaugural elected representative from the newly established Amri constituency, embodies the hopes of tribal communities and will enhance the representation of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao in the legislative arena. I wish Dr. Teron all the best,” the Chief Minister added.

The Amri (ST) constituency is situated in the West Karbi Anglong district, where Teron triumphed in the recent elections, defeating his closest Independent competitor, Bikram Hanse, by a margin of 23,910 votes.

The election for the Deputy Speaker role is anticipated to take place during the Budget session.

Last month, BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass was elected as the Speaker during the inaugural session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly.

In the recent elections, the ruling coalition achieved a significant victory, securing 102 out of 126 seats in the Assembly. Among the NDA partners, the BJP won 82 seats, marking its highest tally in Assam, while the AGP and BPF each obtained 10 seats.
