Guwahati, Oct 21: On Wednesday, the state of Assam commemorated Police Commemoration Day at the 10th Battalion headquarters in Kahilipara, honoring six police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid a wreath at the martyrs’ altar, paying his respects to the brave personnel.
A ceremonial parade took place at the headquarters to honor those police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the state.
During his address, Sarma noted that 156 police personnel across India had died in the line of duty in the past year, emphasizing the importance of remembering their sacrifices.
“In the last year, Assam Police lost six officials and jawans while on duty. Today, we honor their memory. Since Independence, over 900 personnel from Assam Police have made the ultimate sacrifice. This day is significant for both Assam Police and Indian police forces,” the Chief Minister stated.
He also expressed deep respect and gratitude to the families of those who have sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.
“I extend my heartfelt respect and gratitude to all families who have lost their loved ones,” Sarma added.
Police Commemoration Day is observed every year on October 21 to honor police personnel who have died in the line of duty.
This day specifically commemorates the ten policemen who were ambushed and killed by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959.
In related news, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking at a commemoration event in New Delhi, remarked that the Northeast has made significant strides towards peace following various agreements and the disarmament of thousands.
“The entire Northeast has moved towards peace due to several agreements and the laying down of arms by thousands of individuals,” Shah stated, noting that a favorable environment for development has emerged in the region.
He also praised the contributions of police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel to internal security, particularly commending the CAPF and the CoBRA Battalion for their efforts in combating Left-wing extremism.
