Assam Government Unveils Cultural Initiatives in 2026-27 Budget

The Assam Government has announced exciting cultural initiatives in its 2026-27 Budget, including funding for films on legendary figures like Lachit Barphukan and Swahid Kushal Konwar. Additionally, a grand closing ceremony for Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's birth centenary will be held in New Delhi, celebrating his legacy and contributions to Indian culture. This initiative aims to honor these icons and promote their stories on a national platform, fostering a sense of unity and cultural appreciation across the country.
 

Cultural Initiatives Announced in Assam's Budget

Guwahati, July 10: On Friday, the Assam Government revealed a range of cultural initiatives as part of the 2026-27 State Budget. This includes funding for feature films that celebrate the legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan and the freedom fighter Swahid Kushal Konwar, along with plans for a grand closing ceremony for Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's birth centenary celebrations in New Delhi.

During the Budget presentation in the Assembly, Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced that the government would collaborate with a renowned filmmaker to produce a high-quality commercial feature film depicting the life of Lachit Barphukan.

This film aims to highlight the legacy of the esteemed Ahom commander, whose strategic leadership during the Battle of Saraighat is considered a pivotal moment in Assam's history.

Additionally, the Budget includes provisions for a commercial feature film honoring Swahid Kushal Konwar, aiming to showcase his contributions during India's struggle for independence and to share his ideals and patriotism with audiences nationwide.

In another significant cultural initiative, the Minister announced that the grand closing ceremony for the birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika will take place in New Delhi later this year.

This event is intended as a national homage to the iconic singer, lyricist, composer, filmmaker, and cultural figure, aiming to extend his legacy beyond Assam while celebrating his enduring messages of humanity, cultural unity, and national solidarity.

The closing ceremony is anticipated to gather distinguished personalities from music, literature, cinema, and public life to pay tribute to one of India's most cherished cultural icons, sharing his timeless music with a broader audience across the nation.
