Assam Government Seeks Support for Madhupur Satra Development

The Assam government is actively seeking additional land and support from West Bengal to develop Madhupur Satra, a site of cultural significance linked to Srimanta Sankardev. Guwahati, Sept 19: The government of Assam is actively pursuing additional land and collaboration from West Bengal to enhance and develop the historic Madhupur Satra in Cooch Behar, which is linked to the final days of the esteemed polymath Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev.

On Saturday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that officials from the West Bengal government have shown readiness to assist in the development of Madhupur Satra.

“We have requested land from West Bengal. If we are unable to acquire more land, we will proceed with the development of the Satra on the existing site. This location holds significant memories of Srimanta Sankardev, and our aim is to transform it into a culturally and spiritually important tourist attraction while enhancing the area,” Sarma stated.

The Assam government is also considering the option of purchasing adjacent land to enable a more extensive development initiative.

“We will explore the possibility of acquiring nearby land to facilitate a larger-scale development of Madhupur Satra,” Sarma added.

Sarma also highlighted the presence of North Bengal Development Minister Nisith Pramanik at the event, who confirmed the West Bengal government’s backing for the project.

“Minister Nisith Pramanik is present, and he has assured that the West Bengal government will contribute Rs 30 crore towards the development of Madhupur Satra,” Sarma mentioned.

Additionally, he extended an invitation to a delegation from the West Bengal government to visit Batadrava Than in Assam to observe the development efforts at the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev.

“I have invited the West Bengal government delegation to Batadrava Than to witness the progress we have made at Srimanta Sankardev's birthplace,” he stated.

“Madhupur Satra is the last place associated with Srimanta Sankardev. The governments of West Bengal and Assam are collaborating on this initiative. Just as we have developed Batadrava Than, we will also enhance Madhupur Satra in honor of Srimanta Sankardev,” Sarma concluded.

The Assam government will allocate Rs 1 lakh monthly for the maintenance of the Satra, as announced by Sarma.
