Guwahati, Oct 24: In light of a troubling increase in road accidents during the recent Durga Puja celebrations, the Assam government is contemplating more stringent traffic regulations and enhanced road safety initiatives, as stated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday.

During a live social media session, Sarma encouraged citizens to wear helmets while riding motorcycles, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and report hazardous road conditions and potholes to the relevant authorities.

“I urge young riders to always wear helmets and remind everyone to refrain from drinking and driving. If you come across dangerous road sections or potholes, please notify the authorities for prompt action,” the Chief Minister emphasized.

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) reported over 100 cases of road accidents during the Puja festivities, with 114 individuals admitted to its emergency department from October 16 to October 21.

Sarma mentioned that he would confer with deputy commissioners and police superintendents to discuss strategies for stricter traffic enforcement, noting that the increase in accidents over the past two years is alarming.

“We must enforce traffic regulations more rigorously. The rise in accidents in recent years is concerning, and we need to implement stronger measures to enhance road safety,” he stated.

On October 20, Sarma had also voiced his worries regarding the escalating number of road accidents in Assam, attributing the issue to accident-prone areas, ongoing road repairs, and unsafe driving habits.

“Accidents are on the rise, and we are deeply concerned. While some areas have seen improvements, others remain problematic, particularly where road renovations are underway. We are actively working to address these hazardous spots,” Sarma informed reporters.

The Chief Minister reiterated the importance of raising awareness about road safety, especially concerning drunk driving and the necessity of wearing helmets.

“Accidents occur for various reasons, including driving under the influence and not wearing helmets. We need to foster greater awareness,” he concluded.
