Introduction of Financial Assistance Scheme

Guwahati, Jan 2: On Friday, the Assam government officially introduced a monthly financial assistance program aimed at Udashin Bhakats linked to satras throughout the state. Each participant in this initiative will receive a monthly sum of Rs 1,500.

During the launch on the second day of 2026, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that this initiative was first proposed in last year's budget and is now being implemented to honor the significant spiritual and cultural contributions of Udashin Bhakats.

The chief minister expressed, “We are fortunate to serve the satras. As a token of appreciation for the spiritual, cultural, and social roles played by Udashin Bhakats, Rs 1,500 will be deposited directly into their bank accounts each month.”

Sarma elaborated that the list of beneficiaries was compiled after district commissioners gathered information about Udashin Bhakats in collaboration with sattradhikars from various satras. This verified information was then uploaded onto the DIDS portal. He assured that the assistance would be credited on the 10th of each month and that any eligible Bhakats initially overlooked would be included in future phases.

Official data indicates that 620 Udashin Bhakats will benefit from the scheme's first phase. Majuli has the highest number of beneficiaries at 474, followed by Jorhat with 54, Lakhimpur with 22, and Kamrup with 14.

State Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora remarked that the scheme aims to honor the enduring tradition of devotion, discipline, and service that Udashin Bhakats maintain within the satra framework.

The chief minister also emphasized the historical significance of Assam’s Vaishnavite movement, noting that the satra system has evolved into Sattriya and Grihasthi traditions, with Udashin Satras recognized for their strict adherence to discipline. He acknowledged the financial challenges many satras are currently facing.

Additionally, Sarma announced the establishment of the Assam Satra Aayog to tackle issues related to financial aid and the safeguarding of satra land. He referenced a recent report indicating that over 15,200 bighas of satra land in Assam are currently encroached upon.

He stated, “We are unequivocally committed to protecting satra land. The proposed Satra Aayog will have the authority to file complaints and initiate eviction processes when necessary.”
