Guwahati, July 31: The Assam administration has declared a six-month moratorium on loan repayments for individuals impacted by recent floods, as the death toll has risen to 80 following two additional fatalities, while the number of affected individuals has decreased to 2.12 lakh.

During a live session on social media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that he led a special meeting with the State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC), which included representatives from the Reserve Bank of India, NABARD, SBI, and various commercial banks.

"The meeting resulted in a relief initiative for borrowers in the flood-affected districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. A six-month moratorium will be granted to all individuals impacted by the floods in these areas," he stated.

Sarma emphasized that banks will evaluate the circumstances of borrowers, ensuring that only those affected by the floods will benefit from this moratorium. He urged others not impacted by the floods to continue their EMI payments.

Additionally, the Chief Minister mentioned that the repayment period for loans taken by flood-affected individuals could be extended from one year to seven years, depending on the type of loan.

"Many small business owners have suffered total losses due to the floods. Banks will provide an extra Rs 10,000 to their loan accounts without requiring new collateral or mortgages," Sarma added.

Previously, the opposition party, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), had called on the government and the RBI to swiftly implement a six-month moratorium on all loan repayments for those affected by the catastrophic floods in the region.

Furthermore, the state government will allocate Rs 1.5 lakh as a one-time aid to each Namghar, a Vaishnavite worship place, in the severely impacted districts of Sivasagar and Charaideo for reconstruction efforts.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has also visited the flood-affected regions to evaluate the damage and oversee ongoing relief and rescue operations. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma has requested a support package from the central government for the relief and rehabilitation of those affected by the unprecedented flooding.

As of Thursday, the flood-related death toll in Assam has reached 80, with two additional deaths reported, while the number of affected individuals has decreased to 2.12 lakh across four districts, according to an official report.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that two individuals lost their lives in the last 24 hours due to the floods, with both fatalities occurring in Sivasagar district, including a young boy.

With these recent deaths, the total fatalities from this year's floods have risen to 80.

According to ASDMA's daily flood update, over 2,12,400 individuals remain affected in Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Sivasagar districts, with Charaideo being the most severely impacted, affecting nearly 80,000 people, followed by Sivasagar (71,000) and Jorhat (40,000).

The flood situation has shown signs of improvement since Wednesday, when over three lakh individuals were reported affected across the four districts.

The ASDMA has been managing 112 relief camps and distribution centers in these districts, currently providing assistance to 75,583 affected individuals.
