Guwahati, Sep 24: The Assam government has established a two-member ministerial group tasked with reviewing recommendations aimed at safeguarding, promoting, and developing the Dimasa language.

An official directive indicates that this group will assess the findings of a committee formed to address issues related to the Dimasa language, as outlined in Clause 5.1 of the 2023 settlement agreement.

The panel includes Assam's Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and Hill Areas Minister Krishnendu Paul.

These ministers are responsible for analyzing the recommendations in the committee's report and exploring various facets concerning the preservation and advancement of the Dimasa language.

Upon completing their review, the group will present its recommendations to the state government for further action.

The official directive specifies that the panel was created to evaluate the “Report of the Committee constituted in connection with matters relating to Protection, Promotion and Development of the Dimasa Language,” in line with Clause 5.1 of the 2023 Memorandum of Settlement (MoS).

The Hill Areas Department has been instructed to offer necessary secretarial support to the ministerial group during its discussions and evaluation of the committee's recommendations.

This initiative is part of fulfilling commitments made under the 2023 MoS, which was signed by the Assam government, the Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA), and the Dimasa Peoples’ Supreme Council (DPSC).

The Dimasa language is predominantly spoken by the Dimasa community in Assam's hill districts and surrounding regions.

Addressing the preservation and development of indigenous languages is crucial for enhancing cultural and linguistic identity in the area.
