Assam Government Expands Bhawan Network Across India

The Assam government is actively expanding its network of Bhawans across India, with plans for new facilities in Guwahati and other cities. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently inaugurated the Assam Bhawan in Bengaluru, highlighting its role in supporting Assamese citizens traveling for education, healthcare, and business. The initiative reflects a growing interest from other states to establish their own Bhawans in Assam, with 16 states having submitted proposals. This expansion aims to provide a home away from home for Assamese people, fostering social integration and support.

Guwahati, October 16: The Assam government is making strides in allocating land for state Bhawans proposed by 16 different states in Guwahati, as the city becomes a central hub for inter-state administrative and public services.

During the inauguration of the newly built Assam Bhawan in Bengaluru's Kumbalgodu area, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this development.

He noted that this initiative showcases the increasing interest from other states in establishing their own Bhawans in Assam.

"The Assam government has proactively constructed Assam Bhawans in various states, and now 16 states have submitted proposals for their own Bhawans in Guwahati. We are moving forward with the land allocation process for these states," Sarma stated at the inauguration.

The Assam Bhawan in Bengaluru, constructed at a cost of Rs 71.24 crore on 12 bighas of land, aims to support Assamese individuals visiting Karnataka for education, medical care, business, and other reasons.

Sarma emphasized that this facility is more than just a guest house or administrative space.

"Each Assam Bhawan across the nation serves as a home away from home, providing a sense of comfort and belonging outside our state. These facilities also play a crucial role in social integration," he remarked.

Highlighting Bengaluru's importance as a hub for higher education, advanced medical services, and business opportunities, the Chief Minister mentioned that the facility is designed to assist students, patients, and their families visiting the city.

The four-story Assam Bhawan features seven suites, 26 mini-suites, 36 double-occupancy rooms, and a 24-bed dormitory. Additionally, it includes one-, two-, and three-bedroom residential units for government officials visiting Karnataka.

Other amenities comprise a dining area, a restaurant offering local cuisine, a banquet hall, a library, a gym, and facilities for indoor games.

As part of its expansion efforts, the Assam government is also redeveloping and reconstructing Bhawans in various cities.

Currently, Assam has two Bhawans in New Delhi and one each in Mumbai, Kolkata, Shillong, Chennai, and Vellore.

Sarma announced that the third Assam Bhawan in New Delhi is complete and set to be inaugurated on November 29.

The government is also working on redeveloping the existing Assam Bhawan on Russell Street in Kolkata and is reconstructing its facility in Mumbai. Furthermore, plans are underway to establish another Assam Bhawan in Mumbai, which would double the number of such facilities in the city.

Additionally, the Delhi government has recently allocated land for another Assam facility in the national capital, which could bring the total number of Assam Bhawans in Delhi to four.

This expansion initiative aims to provide accommodation and support for individuals from Assam traveling outside the state for education, healthcare, official duties, business, and other needs.
